Personal Tech - Disk Defragment - How to Avoid Problems of Defragmentation

Filed under: Personal Tech - 29 Dec 2009 from author

Tech & Personal

I received a comment on one of my articles recently. Usually, comments are about the article content. Either someone agrees or disagrees with me. By leaving a comment they can let me know. Most comments I receive are from people telling me they found out what they needed to know to get their computers going at full speed again. This is very nice; after all, it’s what I’m here for!

However, the comment I wanted to talk about in this article was from a man who is having trouble getting his computer running at an acceptable level. Most article publishers will not forward email addresses comments come from, so I have no way to help this man except by writing another article and hoping he finds it. The following is the comment he sent to me:

Out of the box the immediate impression is very positive. The owners say the phone looks sturdy, sleek, and feels good in their hands. The visual appeal is also there, with every owner saying the colors are sharp, screen display is awesome, and they could find no negatives with their visual feel. Not one of the many Droid owners we talked to said anything negative about the look or display. ‘Nuff said.

My answer I would have emailed to him would have been as follows:

I agree with the driver scanner support people you were talking with; you have a conflict. However, before you go too far into this problem, be aware of two things:

· Viruses and Spyware can create conflicts and

· A certain amount of repairs I make weekly are to PC’s that have been scanned for viruses and spyware, sometimes several times, but didn’t find the infection that was hiding on the hard drive.

Facebook is one of many pre-loaded apps, and is smooth as Barry White. The phone is also loaded with Google GPS Maps (exclusive to this phone), which replaces your need for a GPS, and when used with the Google Voice app, is a good enough reason to buy the phone all by itself.

I really think you have an undetected virus or you have two different virus/spyware type scanners creating a conflict. Still, if following this procedure doesn’t get you anywhere, it is time to backup your files and reinstall your operating systems. Virus scanners, registry cleaners and such are great for stopping problems from developing to this point but still, sometimes some problems do take your OS beyond the point it can be repaired. Sorry, it happens. However, I still think you have a virus hiding in there and with a little diligence, you’ll get it out. Good luck!

Filed under: Personal Tech - 28 Dec 2009 from author

Is it really possible to access particular criminal records? This article will enlighten you on how you go about finding out whether a person has a criminal record or not.

Just how possible is it to access the criminal records and is it possible without having to pay for it. Accessing criminal records is doable and it all varies on how deep you want to search regardless of any payment . If you want a free inmate record search then you must be prepared to do a lot of work to get the information that you want.

Most states have inmate records so that anyone can access them. You can approach the relevant government structure that keeps these records and ask to see the record that you are interested in. What you will get in this case is exactly that and nothing more. Past convictions in different states will not be known.

Luckily there are some people who have taken the time to bring together the records of all the states and archived them into a simple to search database. If you want a free inmate record search you will probably find one or two sites that offer this service. What you must bear in mind is that compiling this data takes time and lots of money. Some people do not trust the dependability and truth of free sites.

Alternatively you could try the fee based sites, for a relatively small fee you can get up to date and reliable information on the search that you want carried out. Inside an inmates record you will find their name, the penitentiary at which they were held and the crime they were convicted for.

If you want more intricate details concerning the case you would have to access court case records, police records, etc. When using a fee based site one search is enough to find all the info you need. Free inmate record searches only give you a small portion of what you need. Check out one or two fee based sites you will be surprised how inexpensive they are.

Some Tips To Prolonging The Usefulness of Ink Laser Printer Cartridges and Cartridges for Printers

Filed under: Personal Tech - 28 Dec 2009 from author

1.    Only print what is essential.
Prior to printing any specific selection of a document, assess its worth and need so that you spend no resources printing items that may be of no of use.  More to the point, just print what is completely essential to save the amount of inkjet printer ink cartridges and recycled paper being utilized.  The less ink which is utilized for every print job, the better the laser printer cartridges keep going.
Additionally, stuff that may be downloaded on disks, instead of laser printing, should be saved.  Employ DVDs or peripheral drives to download the spreadsheets and records in lieu of laser printing them out. Reports and e-mails generally should not be printed except you truly need them. There should never be a need to print jokes or funny things.  Printing these things wastes dollars in ink, printers cartridges and paper.

2. You ought to laser print text instead of graphics.
Printing letters or spreadsheets for appraisal later can be effective, however you should just print the essential words and any supplementary stuff which are required.  Pass up laser printing photos, images, spreadsheets, or multicolored charts if having a paper photocopy is not necessary.

3. Use the “Print Preview” function.
Print Preview is an extremely useful tool that gives a snap shot of the way the finished article should look once laser printed.  “Print Preview” should help you maneuver text, characters, and spaces and choose which pages or selections have to be laser printed.  Think about turning off the color ink laser printer cartridges, selecting just the pages you will want copies of, and the text which is absolutely needed - in particular the final sheet with the footer that you get with every laser print job.  This radically reduces the amount of ink utilized, in addition to the amount of paper used.

4. Laser print text just with the black ink laser printer cartridges (turn off the color ink cartridge).
Print text documents which are just black and white and no color with only the black ink printer cartridges.  Constantly chose black and white laser printing as a substitute of color ink laser printing when feasible.  It probably may vary on the class of printer you are using but there might be the ability to go for grayscale laser printing by utilizing just the black ink cartridge.  Grayscale is a poorer quality, but again, you might adjust it for your ultimate document.  If you want to print black text with color ink printer cartridges, many colors are mixed together and manipulated to produce black ink.  That will drain the color ink cartridge much more rapidly than it might run down the black only ink cartridge.  If you are not laser printing quality documents for a proposal or if you are printing text only, there is a decent chance you should not desire or need the other colors.

5. If doable, laser print in draft mode.
Make use of the draft print quality function every time possible. There is a range of options provided. You might see several options under the tab “Paper/Quality” which can allow you select the draft option resolution printing. The document will not laser print at the best resolution, but that might not matter if you are going to reference documents that you don’t want later. All you need to do is switch to the better quality when you need a better version of a document.
When you want to make the most of these tips, you may soon experience generous savings in laser laser printercartridges and the cost linked with them.

A Long List Of E-Book Readers Fighting For Their Market Share

Filed under: Personal Tech - 26 Dec 2009 from author

Right now there are a huge number of manufacturers competing in the nascent, but rapidly growing, e-book reader market. The competition level is a clear signal that high growth is predicted in this sector. And this strong competition is going to be good for consumers as manufacturers fall over themselves to improve specifications and offer lower prices.

The list of manufacturers who have e-book readers in development – or in some cases, ready for release in the near future – is impressive. Sony, Asus, iRex, Plastic Logic, Barnes and Noble – not to mention Microsoft and Apple – are all lined up and jostling for their share of the market.

There’s not much doubt about the dominant player in the market at the moment. The Amazon Kindle reader has not only dominated the market, but has been pivotal in its development since it was launched in November 2007. Now into its second iteration with the Kindle 2 and the large screen Kindle DX, Amazon has secured a 60% share of the American e-book reader market. The Kindle reader is now their number one product and, on October 19 this year, after what seemed like a long wait, they started shipping the international Kindle 2 to over 100 countries worldwide. It’s a backhanded compliment to Amazon that every new e-book reader that is announced (and there are plenty, the list above is far from exhaustive) and which shows any promise whatsoever, is immediately dubbed the “Kindle Killer”. Right now, the Kindle is setting the benchmark which must be achieved, and then bettered, in order to achieve success.

In case anyone feels that the Kindle’s current dominance is bordering on unassailable, it’s probably worth remembering that Amazon were a pretty late entrant to the market when they first launched the Kindle. The original e-book reader is generally agreed to be the Franklin eBookMan which was launched in 1999 – a decade ago. The Sony PRS also launched before the Kindle’s 2007 release.

The Kindle’s success for Amazon came about as the result of a number of factors. In the first place, Amazon had a strong association with books, being one of the biggest online retailers. They also had a huge selection of books available for download – they currently offer over 300,000 titles on their Kindle store. The wireless connectivity on offer – with no ongoing fees – was another major selling point.

Just as Amazon came from nowhere to secure the number one position, one of the other contenders could do exactly the same - and in the short term. For example, Barnes and Noble have more than one million titles available for download to their new Nook e-book reader. They will also use the ePub format – which the majority of readers in development seem to be favoring. The format used by the Kindle is proprietary. Pick a Kindle book – read it on your Kindle.

The Nook will also let you “lend” books to your family and friends for a fortnight. During the loan period, the borrower will be able to read it and the lender will be unable to use their Nook to access it – just like borrowing a “real” book in fact. The only difference is that you will be guaranteed to get it back.

The next generation Sony reader – the Sony Daily Edition – will be a large display format, like the Kindle DX, but unlike the DX it will have touch screen control options. It will also allow users to download e-books from participating public libraries on loan. Again – just like a traditional book.

The other readers in development all have a number of individual features that may make them more appealing to users than the Kindle. Amazon have a fight on their hands – and it seems sure that they won’t relinquish their top position without a fight. Given their innovating role in the development of the market thus far, and considering the importance of the Kindle ebook reader to their business, it seems reasonable to expect them to have a few new ideas yet to be unleashed.

Considering the high level of activity amongst all of the key manufacturers, it looks like the e-book reader market is about to start expanding even more rapidly. Hopefully the fierce competition that seems about to unfold will drive prices low enough to take e-book readers out of the geek domain and into the mainstream personal mobile tech market.
